our thoughts of homeless people

we all have our different thoughts about homelessness but one thing we can agree on is that they have all been through a rough time in one part of their life. One thing which keeps creeping up in our discussions is people who are alcoholics and drug users who are homeless. some young people we have spoke to are of the opinion that homelessness is caused by drug or alcohol use/addiction and many of us dont understand why when your homeless you choose to by drugs or alcohol rather than food?
What do you think....?

True Life Stories...

Jack was released from prison in January 2009 after serving 18 months of a 3 year sentence. This was Jack’s first prison sentence, he went in to prison on a methadone programme but was still using heroin occasionally.
Jack engaged with the prison CARAT teams to help him with his addiction and left prison clean from all substances including methadone.
Jack was released in to Bed and Breakfast accommodation where he found it difficult to maintain his abstinence from heroin, eventually he lapsed back in to use and shortly after was referred to The Wallich Gorwelion project, which is a new project for ex-offenders who wish to abstain from using substances.

Since Jack has lived at the core house he has maintained his abstinence from heroin and other drugs, he is currently reducing on his methadone programme and has not re-offended since. Jack has shown great progress and has been keen to get involved with activities at project and also engagement with outside agencies; he attends NA meetings and says that the support he has received at Gorwelion has played a major part in his continued recovery from substance misuse.

Help from the city!

homeless people in Swansea sleep generally in shop doors or under tunnels, but there are some charities which help some of the homeless but not ALL of the homeless people! There are many charities like Zac's place which feeds some of the homeless, also there is a shelter for homeless to go to sleep for the night but the problem is there is only one bed so not all of the homeless people in swansea have a bed and also there is a long waiting list for the bed because many people want it.Other places homeless people can go for help is Swansea Young Single Homeless Project and the Bays project which supports young people to find accomidation and help with benefits ect.
